Shiver by Karen Robards

Author Karen Robards created an independent, determined and very realistic protagonist in the form of Samantha ‘Sam’ Jones for her romantic suspense novel, Shiver.

Narrator Shannon McManus breaths life into Sam and the othercover of Shiver characters with her distinct cadence. She brings the range of emotions the characters encounters to the surface. Her vocalization will draw you in as the story takes you on a suspenseful roller coaster ride.

Sam is a single mom determined to provide for her four-year-old son, Tyler. Working as a repo lady in a rough part of St. Louis is hard work, but she’ll do what she has to do. Picking up the flashy BMW should have been an easy job, but what Sam found in the trunk turned her life upside down.

Working undercover is a dangerous life, but when you’re pretending to be a bad cop turned informant it can be down-right deadly. Daniel Panterro is just trying to do his job, but it looks like time is running out for him. Shot, beaten up and left in a trunk Daniel is surprised to see the pretty woman staring at him when the trunk lid pops open.

Knowing that her life is now in danger, Daniel has no choice but to take Sam and her son on the run with him. He’s determined to keep them safe no matter the cost. Sam doesn’t like counting on anyone else, but she finds herself drawn to Daniel despite what she thinks she knows about him.

Robards combines a mother’s love for her child, a good guy trying to do the right thing, bits of humor and sizzling sexual tension with ruthless killers bent on getting what they want for an adrenaline fueled story. The suspense will have you wondering who the bad guys really are.

Shiver moves at a steady pace and has well-developed characters that are likable. Several scenes involving the youngster will tug at your heartstrings. The interaction between Sam and Daniel is tantalizing and frustrating. It’s a story that will keep you guessing.

  1. Mason - This really does sound like a suspenseful story. It sounds as though there's a well-drawn sense of place too, which I always think is important in a novel. Thanks for sharing.
